Maui, a 15 month old Belgian Malinois, will be Shenandoah’s first K9. He was named by Officer Duenas who is currently training with him, and who named him after a character in the movie “Moana.” They were both certified through the National Narcotic Detector Dog Association on June 23.
City council approved accepting the dog during its April 27, 2022 meeting. Shenandoah police chief Troye Dunlap said Integrity K9 in Huntsville had offered the dog and training for free because they determined Shenandoah would benefit from the award for several reasons. Greg Smith, Integrity K9 owner, said, “I just want to give you guys the opportunity to get on top of it right now – you can shut down – you could work that interstate with this dog and people would find another route to find their drugs if you if you do it right.”
The main cost to the city is estimated to be $11,000 for up-fitting a police vehicle.
The Sentinel will provide Maui updates as they become available.
